HONEYWELL-matchng careers for everybody

The fiasco happened on may 23rd....
I really dint want a post on taht...

but then my first tryst with
corporate india was too big an event for me to
let it pass..

so i hav given sufficient time for the
wounds to heal...cud hav come out
with this post a coupla days early,
but i dint want to add insult to my
own injury........

Chances honeywell wil not b coming to campus..
so what u read here,mite jus end up with zilch
practical value...

neways,if hwell is coming to ur campus,u wil
get to see nice lill hoardings that talk abt
the diff career prospects for diff kinds of ppl...
dont believe a word....honeywell has only
one kind of job, the job requires a dozen skils,
i despise.....

in the PPT u wil hear a lot abt honeywell.
global leaders in aviation blah blah....in fact
the ppt talked abt sachin,vish anand,leander peas...
the ppt talked abt an engineer working with hwell
in the same breadth as sachin playing cricket....
he said an engineer takes to hwell like a fish to water.
I hope atleast a few innocent souls in the audi believed
what he said,i certainly didnot.

then came the real shocker....
the test had 3 sections
AT(20 quant+10 logical)-30 mins
c(30 qns)-15 mins
tech(60 qns)-50 mins

the mphasis was clearly on technical aspects...
now if smebdy did the mistake of clearing the written round,
he has to endure 2 tech interviews n a HR interview.
n oh,i hav ignored the gd...

quant was pretty decent...logical qns were straight out of
barrons gre..but 30 mins was too short a time.with no negatives,
there was no differentiator...next up,was the c interview,
i wil refrain frm saying nethng abt this.there were ppl
who maxed the c paper.n there were ppl who were absolutely
flummoxed..

the next hurdle was the tech section..60 qns frm 5 diff areas.
4 areas had ten qns each n 1 sec had 20 qns..for ece microprocessor
was the 20 qn subject.for cse ,data structures git its share of 20.
a few qns were real sitters, there were a few blinders
as welll..it was supposed to be for 50 mins..but most of us
were meandering outside after 20 mins...its upto u to decide,
if the 30 min saved ,was due to our ingenuousness r utter stupidity..

A few ppl actually cleared the written test .
then came the next shock, gd was not used to eliminate ppl..
the no. of ppl eliminated in the gd cud be counted with the
fingers of one hand...

the AT results had a lot of shock n surprise element..
nearly 60% of the ppl who cleared were frm ECE n CSE..
hwel dint touch the it dept even with the help
of a bargepole....in an utopian world somebody wud hav
met with the hwell team n asked for reasons...but this is...

the process was so gruesome, after a while nobody
knew anythng..nobody was sure ,who was stil part of the
process n who got kicked out at whch point...

HWEll did manage to pick a few ppl..
hats off them..
but nobody really is jealous,
ppl pity those poor souls

TCS is comin down on june 2,am sure
it wil b more xciting..

CAT CRISIS

Lemme begin by saying this,this post has nothing to do
with my long term career prospects....it has nothing to do
with CAT as in common admission test r the iims...

rather,this post is abt the big cats...the tigers...
am jus back after watching tonight at ten(CNBC)..
i really luv watchng cnbc tv 18 after 8 pm..
the anchors are awesome,well groomed,carrythemselves well
and present themselves well ..an added incentive is the fact
that they know wat they r talking...on monday
n tuesday, karan thapar comes for the show at ten
n i usually exercise my control over the remote n move on to
sthng better.....

today the show was abt the dwindling tiger population....
project tiger,whch resulted in the creation of tiger paradises
like sariska,ranthambore to name a few,hasnot actually helped matters....
n over the last coupla weeks PM has spoken more abt Tigers,than
everythng else put together....
the show had sunita narain(lady who famously said coke n pepsi
contain pesticides),the head of the task force set up by the PMO
talking abt involving local communities in conservation n
minimizing poaching....there was some technical snafu
n therefore dr.valmik thapar(renowned wildlife expert)
who was supposed to join frm the mumbai studio,
spoke on the telephone....

dr.thapar was very forthright....he talked abt a anti poaching bureau,
inline with the narcotics bureau....his accent n command over the english
language was very gud....i donno whch place had the privilege of seeing him
graduate...but i realised one thng,hes never been newhere near *CE(am borrowing
venkat's,{for lack of a better word lemme call it} phraseology)

thru this post lemme appeal to my dear readers,

do all u can to prevent poachng...
let the tiger numbers swell

at the fag end of the program.kapil sibal spoke
of thngs like tiger dna finger printing using faeces,to
determine whether a phenomenon called inbreeding occurs...
n then use ejaculation n finally artificial insemination......

Late nite television

Yesterday night,or to be accurate early today morning,
i had cmpltd all my internet chores...but at 12:30,the time
was too early to goto sleep...
if i were wordsworth,i wud hav penned a poem on the
agony of spending a slpless nite..but i hav my limitations
n am not gud wen it comes to adhering to meter n structrure..

In the 3 yrs that i ahv spent in the quest of bcoming an engr,
i hav heard the pleasures of post midnite television watchng,
all too often...but hav never really watchd telly beyond 11 30....
so i decided to switch my tv....

first up was sun tv...i was shell shocked when i saw the prgrm...
between 12:00-12:30 am sun tv re telecasts the soap that
runs on all week days at 7....what a way to start a day..ironically
the soap is titled "anantham" (tamil for joy).if u give the name a go by,
u wil not find joy newhr in the serial..

K tv was my secnd stop n a movie dubbed frm telugu was running...
i hav spent 75+ days in the last 100 days at home...so i watched
KTV make the transition frm 3 movie/day to 4 movies a day to now
6 movie per day...this has its advantages..a month at home
n u wil end up watching all kamal,rajini,mani ratnam.....movies
many times over....but the movies taht run in ktv at 7 am in the morning
n 11 pm are very very poor....

then i switched over to kiran tv...i hav never watched it b4..but in
the masculine social circles of co educational institutions ,kiran tv
enjoys a certain reputation...but alas,wen i watched the movie
taht was shown,

was next only to godliness....
and naah,am no pagan.....

felt very depressed..

spent some time watchng cnbc n bbc


then finally succumbed to sleep

today ,the final yrs( r shud i call them prefinal yrs)
had a glimpse of how grossly mismanaged the placement cell is.......

the rumours in the grapevine talked of a prepalcement
talk by CTS....messages were sent saying talk starts at
9..ppl were asked to make their presence felt by 8:30...
attendance was compulsory......

cut to reality...

no soul moved til 9:30 in the K S AUDI....
ppl started to move out.....
then suddenly sbdy entered n watever was scheduled started....
most ppl were outside,busy with their CVs...so
much for compulsory attendance........

n then biggest fumble ,wat happened was not
a formal talk...the cts HR head,happens to be
our alumni...n as luck wud hav it,he had some work in madurai...
so he wanted to share sme pearls of wisdom with us folks...

if ppl cud call this a PPT,then am waiting for more funny
thngs to unfold.....

the high point of the day:

Mechatronics dudes in sme fancy clothing....they made an awful bunch
today...so much for neatly pressed full sleeved shrts n shoes..
but wat added insult to the injury ,was most of them were seen
at the college pump house.....

re:direct dilse ek electronics engineer ki kahani

this is a reply to issues raised by 2 blogger friends of mine...
venkat(IIML 2007)n Ananth(???),whose blogs r part of
the links section hav raised several issues regarding the
education system perse

lemme begin by saying this,i share most of their
views...as they say "the system here sucks big time"
but thats one thng,every educationist has accepted..
so rather than shifting the blame,i try to find solutions......

first up...quality of teaching n research

thats not goin to change in most cases..there
r indian silicon valley millionaires who donate millions
of dollars to the MITs to set up labs..they themselves
passed out of the IITs...they wil b more than willing to
set up centres of xcellence,if some kind of expediency n
accountability can be brought into the system...but this wil b
limited to the elite institutions.....

lesser known instis,can collaborate with regional corporates
(its happenening everywhre),but quality of work done by most instis
are not gud enuf to lure corporates....its a vicious cycle then.....
u need money for research....money wil come only when results r produced....

univs hav already realised the acute shrtage of quality teachers..n hav launched some innovative ways to overcme this prob...(dual degrees,direct ph.ds,5 yr integrated masters)...i believe this helps matters.....

the prob wil get solved,when teaching is seen as a honourable if not lucrative
profession....professors need power..then again,wil they refrain frm
misusing it???


second..what hav we done in our 4 yrs at coll

personally,me not not much....
but am as much to blame as the system...
i had all the timw in the world..xcept for a handful of
engg colleges,others rnt that taxing....life at other places is pretty relaxed...

sure,there was no incentive to learn tech...but i cud
hav climbed mountains,improved myself,learnt languages,crossed oceans....
moi dint do all that,simply coz i was lazy...others wil hav their own reasons...
the reason cud b bird watchng,movies,coffee shops..but certainly sth other than the
system

regards choices other than engg....
nobody attracts us towrads engg...there r umpteen other options..
infact the chance to xcel in other activities/interests is more today...
u hav all kinds of talent searches..for entrepreneurs,actors,anchors,......hell ,ther was even a search for big boobs....the fact is that ppl r not bold enuf....

electronics grads ending up in it jobs..that again is not a fn of the system..IMHO,with a BE /BTECH,u r a plain vanilla engr...mayb a ME/MTECH/MS in
DSP VLSI r such other sundry thngs later u wil bcome an electronics engr...
n u wil in all probability end up in TI,NORTEL,NOKIA..................

all,said n done the system sucks bigtime....it sucks coz there
are not enuf ppl ready to take the system head on.....

sachein-little late

well this post shud hav been made
atleast a month early.....
but as they say better late than never...

sachein is yet another movie whr one
of the players in the game of love,realise
their chances of living together with their
lover,wud hav been gr8,had only they xpressed
their love a few hours b4.....

the frst time i saw a movie with this kinda storyline
was eons back....the movie was baghyarajs
"oru oorla oru rajakumari"...bakyaraj loves meena,but
withholds that info,wanting to throw a surprise...by the time
hes ready,he learns abt meenas royal heritage..........

sachein is a similar case......
in fact its so "vijayish".....but for bipasha
n genelia,a shoot wud never hav happened....
the director cud hav taken cut out/edited parts
of earlier vijay movies n arrived at this picture......

but thirupaachi was a success...so no doubting this movie

sachein is more like "sourav"

am sure u hav already watched the movie r heard abt it...
so dont want comment abt the movies worth

kanaa kandein-review

the movie stars srikanth,gopika,vivek among others.....

its about a young n enterprising individuals fight to
see that the results of his scientific endeavors dont fall into
wrong hands....tamil movie goers r accustomed to 2 sides fighting
for a woman, so this storyline is kinda surprising...

the first half is quite gud.somewhere down the line the screenplay
loses steam in the second half.things become too repetitive n u
r able to guess the next frame..

the first stunt sequence,whr the protagonist saves the life
of his future benefactor turned villain is poorly coordinated..
songs r thrust into the script..u find songs whr they r unnecessary..
that plays spoilsport....

vivek...nothng new.nothng refreshing...paartha mathiriyum irukku
paarkara maathiriyum irukku.though more of the former n less of the latter....
i fail to understand what purpose the chem prof serves...

lots of tv actors hav been used for small roles,that i think is
a gud trend...

the heroine has a gud role.n i do believ shes done well..but
i just cant imagine her in skimpy clothes...n that spells
doom to her tamil celluloid career...i wish she gets a few more roles

all said n done the movie is worth watching once.....

best part: first hour
worst segment:most parts of the second half

this is my 4th attempt at blogging...the first 2 avatars r not worth mentioning..

back then i just dint hav the enthu to keep goin.....suddenly the knowledge that a few of my peers blogged with decent regularity,spurred me to start ,what shud rank right up there as one of the most controversial blogs....

the dust is yet to settle,but the urge to blog has got the better of me n here i am.....

i hav taken the cozy cover of anonymity..this i believe wil help me wen it comes to bein straight.....

i hope u njoy reading this ,if not more atleast as much as i njoyed writing this...

a few weeks frm now the placement jamboree wil happen n i wil provide enuf scoops to sustain ur laughter.... the kind of ppl here n their attitude r so reader friendly,that if i key in a miniscule ten percent of what i see around me here,u people wil die of laughter......so lemme be very choosy
